I'm not convinced Trump would move on the criminals, either. Neither Sessions nor Barr took any steps to investigate Fauci, and Trump himself authorized Warp Speed. Crimes: Criminals commit crimes. Honest people came up with the idea of "crime" based on their experience of interacting with all kinds of people and seeing what sorts of interactions felt OK and which felt wrong. But it wasn't until fairly recently that we found out that certain people are born with criminal personalities (either latent or perhaps in full bloom even at birth) and that those people create the majority of problems for all the rest of us. We are very late in figuring this out and what we can possibly do about it. As I see it, our only realistic way forward is for everyone to become much better informed about these personalities and the best way to handle them that keeps us safe from them without violating our own sense of human compassion. And that's just the beginning, because next we have deal with all the prior damage caused by such people!

Right now it seems our best approach to criminals is to make the best use possible of the tools we currently have in our tool chest - the US Constitution and the court system.

The Constitution and court system are helpful, but are based on ideas of "justice" developed before we knew about the criminal personality. The justice system is made tedious on purpose to try to protect honest people from dishonest people who might get into the system. The system relies on the criminal actually being caught doing something, then proving to a jury that he/she really did it. Then if the person gets sent to jail, they may still be able to operate as a criminal from prison (I have certainly heard of this). This level of protection against the criminal mind is insufficient. We have to be able to recognize it in our day-to-day activities and learn to deal with it. If every person caught in a toxic relationship knew how to spot a psychopath and disconnect from them, we'd have a lot less domestic violence and sexual abuse. Same goes for the world stage.
You are very wise. I agree with you completely. I experience this on a daily basis. I've been harassed for decades by someone who uses stealth weapons against me. (I know who it is.) I've asked my local police if they can help me deal with this, and they replied, "Not unless you can prove it's happening." By definition, it's impossible to prove that stealth weapons are being used against oneself. I wonder how many people on earth are suffering similarly. I suspect it's a large number, all of us canceled by society, effectively, because what we are saying is simply too threatening and terrifying for most people to even begin to contemplate.

In fine, all it really says is that he can't even begin to deal with it, which is exactly what almost everyone who is confronted with this reality feels. It's simply too terrifying to contemplate.

My mother had died by then, and she'd been much more vehement, even cruel, in her rejection of what I had to say. At least my father's response was civil, and honest. I respect him for that.
